Most of what we’ve showcased this week has been scrapbook layouts, but today Designer Wendy Sue Anderson is sharing a fun way to incorporate rub-ons in birthday gift bags!
I’m always looking for a little gift bag to tuck in some treats or gift cards – these cute polka-dot printed bags are part of the “Birthday Wishes” collection by Pebbles, and they are super cute just as they are. But, as a paper crafter, I just couldn’t resist dressing them up a little bit.
I started by wrapping each bag with a 3” strip of patterned paper. I used the new “happy birthday” washi tape to secure the wrap.
Next, I cut strips of the Sprinkles paper and cut them into banner shapes by cutting a notch on the right edge.
In the center of each strip, I placed a “Happy Birthday” rub-on. This is cute, just how it is, but I wanted to make them pop a bit, so I pulled out some of my gelatos and colored right over the top of each sentiment with two different colors.
After coloring them, I used a paintbrush and a bit of water to go over the colors. The result is a fun and playful watercolor effect. The rub-on acts as a sort of “resist” and allows the black to really POP while the colors appear to be behind the lettering. Regular watercolors would yield a similar result.
After completing the banners and allowing them to dry, I added a rosette to the left edge and placed the entire piece on the center of each gift bag. I am excited to fill each bag with goodies and gift cards for some special birthdays!
